Associate

About the Role
Beasties: A Pet Store and More!! is a fun, welcoming destination where customers can get expert husbandry advice, see some amazing reptiles and amphibians, and go home smiling with a new pet, a beautiful enclosure, or both! We want you to have a blast sharing your passion, teaching a kid about their first gecko, and ensuring every customer feels fully supported.

At Beasties, we are all about fun and hard work. The secret to our welcoming, expert-level retail experience is that our animal care standards demand excellence, because the welfare of the animals is directly affected by how well we keep them.

As an Associate, you will be the heartbeat of the store. You will be having great conversations with customers and coworkers while balancing the work of cleaning enclosures, dusting the store, and tong-feeding our monitor lizards. We are hardworking, and we don't cut corners when it comes to our husbandry.

Employment Terms: This position starts as a part-time role. Following a probationary period to ensure a strong mutual fit with our store culture and team dynamics, there is an opportunity for this role to transition into a full-time position.

What You’ll Do

  • Animal Care: Perform daily husbandry tasks including misting, feeding, and cleaning for our reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Our animal care standards demand excellence, and you will be expected to maintain them.
  • Customer Engagement: You set the welcoming tone. Use our "Always Be Positive" and "Always Be Engaging" philosophies to ensure every customer has a great experience. You will seamlessly transition from maintaining habitats to having an expert conversation about reptile care.
  • Store Excellence: Maintain a pristine sales floor through regular cleaning, dusting, restocking, and lifting items (comfortably lifting up to 50 lbs).
  • Operations: Assist with feeder insect management (crickets, dubia, worms) and maintain accurate logs for animal care and sales.

What We’re Looking For

  • Reptile/Amphibian Experience (Required): You must have practical experience caring for reptiles and/or amphibians. Whether through personal experience or professional experience, you should be comfortable handling and identifying the needs of these unique animals.
  • A Welcoming Disposition: We pride ourselves on our store culture. You should have a naturally friendly, outgoing personality and genuinely enjoy spending time talking and laughing with fellow animal nerds.
  • The Master of the Pivot: You can completely set aside whatever chore you are doing the second a customer walks in. We do not want someone who gets mentally stuck on a task and subconsciously rushes a customer out the door just to get back to cleaning. You must be able to instantly shift gears, give the customer your full, welcoming attention, and never let the busy pace ruin your mood.
  • Strong Work Ethic & Leadership Aptitude: You take pride in working hard and going home knowing you accomplished a lot. We value team members who suggest ideas, communicate easily, and have the potential to step into leadership roles in the future.
  • Attention to Detail: Following specific feeding and supplementation schedules is critical to the health of our animals. There is no room for error when it comes to their well-being.

Why Beasties?
At Beasties, we are more than just a pet store; we are a community of enthusiasts. We offer a professional, fast-paced retail environment where animal welfare is the top priority, hard work is recognized, and having fun is part of the job description.
